Final Grade Calculator

Enter the grades you already have with their weights, set your target average and the weight of the final exam, and see the exact score you need. Works on any scale where a higher grade is better

Runs in your browser: what you enter stays on your device

Your Grades and Your Target

Use your school’s own scale (100, 20, 10, 15 points…). The example values change with the language, so replace them with yours.

Weight

Weights can be percentages, points or credits: only their proportions matter. Leave every weight empty to use equal weights.

?If your assessments add up to 100% and the final is worth 40%, enter 40 here. If the weights are points, enter the final’s points.

In the same unit as the other weights. Leave it empty to just get the weighted average.

Result
You need on the final exam
66.5

That is 66.5% of the maximum of 100, to reach an average of 70.

Average so far
72.33
Weight so far
60
Average with a 0 on the final
43.4
Average with the maximum on the final
83.4
The calculation
Σ (grade × weight) = 4,340; Σ weights = 60
Average so far = 4,340 ÷ 60 = 72.33
Needed = (70 × 100 − 4,340) ÷ 40 = 66.5

The needed score is rounded up to two decimals. Your school may round the final average or apply extra rules, which the tool does not model.

How to use it

  1. Enter the highest grade on your scale and the average you want to reach.
  2. Type each grade you already have and its weight. The weight can be a percentage, points or credits.
  3. Enter the weight of the final exam in the same unit. Leave it empty if you only want the weighted average.
  4. Read the score you need, or whether the target is already secured or out of reach.

Example

On a 100-point scale with a target of 70, grades of 72, 65 and 80 weighted 20 each and a final exam weighted 40: the weights add up to 100 and the points so far are 4,340. You need (70 × 100 − 4,340) ÷ 40 = 66.5 on the final exam. A 0 would leave you with an average of 43.4 and a perfect 100 with 83.4.

Methodology

The weighted average. Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are added and the sum is divided by the total weight: average = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ weight. With equal weights this is the ordinary mean. The score you need. With a final exam of weight wf and a target T, the final average is (Σ + x × wf) ÷ (Σ weights + wf). Setting it equal to T and solving for x gives x = (T × total weight − Σ) ÷ wf. If x is zero or negative the target is already secured; if it is above the highest grade it cannot be reached with this exam.

What the tool assumes All grades use one scale where a higher number is better, and weights are proportional. It does not convert letter grades or GPA, and it does not drop the lowest grade, require a minimum on the exam or round the final average, which some schools do.
Privacy Grades and weights never leave your browser. Nothing is stored or uploaded.

Where weighted averages mislead

  1. Simple versus weighted. Grades of 90 and 60 with weights of 20 and 80 give a weighted average of 66, not the simple average of 75, because the heavier grade pulls the result down.
  2. Weights need not add to 100. The tool divides by the total, so percentages, points or credits all work as long as the final exam uses the same unit.
  3. Another scale. The scale must have the same direction for every grade. A scale where the best mark is the lowest number, such as the German 1 to 6 school grades, must be converted first.
  4. Out of reach. A needed score above the maximum means this exam alone cannot reach the target. Check with your school whether other assessments, make-up exams or rounding rules apply.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on the final exam? ▼

Multiply the target by the total weight, subtract the points you already have (each grade times its weight) and divide by the weight of the final exam. The tool does exactly that.

What if my weights do not add up to 100? ▼

That is fine. The tool divides by the sum of the weights, so percentages, points or credits all work, as long as the final exam’s weight is in the same unit.

Can I use it for any grading scale? ▼

Yes, for any scale where a higher number is better: 100, 20, 10, 15 points and so on. Enter the highest possible grade and a target on that scale. Scales where 1 is the best mark need converting first.

Does it convert to GPA? ▼

No. GPA depends on how each school turns scores or letters into points, so the tool works with your numeric grades and your own scale.

What does “target already secured” mean? ▼

It means that even a 0 on the final exam leaves your average at or above the target, according to the weights you entered. Check your school’s rules, since some require a minimum on the exam.

Is anything uploaded or saved? ▼

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent to a server.
